Selena

1997, PG, 2 h 7 min
Written and directed by Gregory Nava

A biographical drama about the life and career of Selena Quintanilla (Jennifer Lopez).

Born into a musical Mexican-American family in Texas, her father Abraham (Edward James Olmos) realizes that his young daughter is talented and begins performing with her at small venues. She finds success in the Spanish-speaking market and then seeks mainstream stardom. Selena begins recording an English-language album but is tragically murdered at the age of 23.

Her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Latin artists.

The soundtrack features some of Selena’s most popular signature songs and includes previously unreleased titles from the album released after her death. Her music is credited as helping to redefine Latin music and its subgenres Tejano, cumbia, and Latin pop.
