Palm Springs Art Museum is proud to participate in the Palm Springs Juneteenth Freedom Weekend with a special screening of Racist Trees, presented in collaboration with the Palm Springs Black History Committee.
Racist Trees is a powerful documentary that follows local residents as they fight to remove large tamarisk trees from a historically Black neighborhood in Palm Springs. Many believe these trees were intentionally planted to segregate and exclude members of the community. The film explores how landscape and policy intersect with issues of racial injustice.
Please note: Palm Springs Art Museum and administrative offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.
About Juneteenth
Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the emancipation of people who were enslaved in the United States. The holiday marks the day in 1865 when news of freedom reached those still enslaved in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is recognized as a day to reflect, honor, and celebrate Black freedom and resilience.
