As part of our virtual Public Programs series, join artists Janine Antoni and Byron Kim for a conversation with Palm Springs Art Museum's Chief Curator & Director of Curatorial Affairs and Programs Rochelle Steiner.

Antoni’s practice blurs the distinction between performance, sculpture, and installation, while Kim’s approach to painting sits at the threshold between abstraction and representation. The discussion will cover both artists’ influences, current projects, and diverse approaches to content and form. We will also consider what it means to be an artist at this particular point in time in the early 21st century. Both Antoni’s and Kim’s works are currently on view in the reinstallation of the permanent collection at Palm Springs Art Museum.

Janine Antoni is a sculptor, photographer, performance artist, and installation artist and throughout her career she has worked between and across these diverse art forms. Antoni earned a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Using her body as a tool for making her work, Antoni has consistently made work through a critical feminist lens.

Byron Kim lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received a BA from Yale University and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Emerging in the 1990s, his work has consistently explored critical topics about identity and representation by working at the intersection of painting and conceptual art.
