About Nick Cave
Nick Cave (b. 1959, Fulton, MO; lives and works in Chicago, IL) is an artist, educator, and messenger whose multidisciplinary work spans sculpture, installation, video, sound, and performance. He is best known for his Soundsuits—vibrant, full-body sculptural forms created in response to the 1991 police beating of Rodney King. These works conceal race, gender, and class, inviting viewers to look without judgment and serving as powerful symbols of resilience, empowerment, and social justice.
Through his art, Cave transforms found materials into deeply affecting meditations on trauma, identity, and renewal. His practice challenges us to see beauty and hope even amid violence and loss, asking how creativity can foster empathy, unity, and change.
