Noah Purifoy’s sculptural works reflected and inspired social change in Southern California, translating events like the 1965 Watts Rebellion through discarded physical materials. With these kinds of found objects, he continued to create sculptural assemblages in the high desert, which later became the site of his Outdoor Desert Art Museum. Presenter Ken Layne will imagine the earlier desert scene that drew Purifoy to Joshua Tree, and speakers Joe Lewis and Yael Lipschutz will introduce Purifoy’s life and practice.
