Images by Lewis Baltz, Joe Deal, John Divola, and Christina Fernandez underscore the essential and contradictory impulses of the human condition – to both construct and destroy the world we inhabit.
In 1975 the exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape observed an aesthetic and conceptual shift in photography, featuring images that captured the vernacular structures of the built environment. These artists offered stark visual meditations on the complexities of the changing American landscape, and in both subject and form, their inquiries resonate today.
