Despite the inhospitable nature of the desert, artists have long been drawn to it. It is partly due to the availability of space in more remote areas, but also to the space itself, to the spiritual connection they feel to the landscape, and the flora and fauna that manage to thrive upon it.
This panel will explore that connection with artists who have lived and worked there — we'll discuss what drew them to the desert, what inspires them, and how they make work. We will also consider if their work has fundamentally changed or been influenced by their environment and, if so, how.
Panelists: Lita Albuquerque, Diane Best, and Sharon Ellis.
Moderated by Scarlet Cheng, arts journalist and adjunct college professor.

The discussion will be followed by a screening of the newly launched profile of Lita Albuquerque produced by The Artist Profile Archive. Running time approximately 14 mins.
Afterwards, guests are invited to attend a cocktail reception in the Elrod Sculpture Gardens, adjacent to the theater.
