Palm Springs Art Museum is launching a series of 2-hour youth mini-camps in July. Join us for a deep dive into the artistic practice of artist and designer Howard Smith, currently on view at the museum.
In three different sessions for children and youth of varying ages, attendees will first enter the exhibition to learn about Howard Smith’s art and then they will each have the opportunity to create their own Smith-inspired masterpieces, matched to their age group.
Light refreshments are provided. All materials are included.
Assistance with class fees is available for families with financial difficulties. Approved on a case-by-case basis. Please email Daniela at drojas@psmuseum.org.
Cardboard Zoo | 3–5 years
July 11, 10:00 am–12:00 pm
Create cardboard animals inspired by the new Howard Smith exhibition! Howard Smith sculpted and decorated animals out of clay and cardboard. Museum educators will take young kids and their adults to meet these works before helping you to create your own animal creations using abstract shapes and colors.
Note: the July 11th mini-camp for 3–5-year-olds requires an adult to be in attendance and to participate with their little one.
Abstract Prints | 6-9 years

Explore print-making techniques using Styrofoam, paper, and ink! Howard Smith created abstract prints on fabrics and with tiles. Create your own image by taking inspiration from everyday shapes and items.
Museum educators will teach you how to create your own stencil before rolling your design with ink and pressing onto a sheet of paper.
Wire Sculptures | 10-12 years
July 25, 10:00 am–12:00 pm
Howard Smith used wire to sculpt faces and abstract 3D artworks. These pieces take on different perspectives as your view shifts. Bend and sculpt a piece of flexible wire to create faces, animals, or plants.
Museum educators will introduce various artworks on display at the museum that use metal and wire to inspire creativity.
