In honor of the 25th Anniversary of the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards and in collaboration with the Desert AIDS Project and the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, the museum is highlighting a selection of artworks gifted by Steve Chase in our Milano and DeGiorgio Galleries. Steve Chase’s contribution of 132 modern and contemporary works by artists such as John Chamberlain, Sam Francis, and Helen Frankenthaler marked a pivotal point of growth for the museum’s collection. Further, his gift of $1.5 million dollars in 1994 launched a campaign that literally raised the roof of the museum with the addition of the third floor.

Our tribute to Steve will continue in the DeGiorgio Gallery with the presentation of five California landscape paintings he gifted to the Living Desert. The selection includes early twentieth-century works by Rinaldo Cuneo, Conrad Buff, Jean Mannheim, and Frank Coburn, artists who were attracted to the beauty and light of the desert.

"Steve Chases's vital gifts changed the thrust of the Palm Springs Art Museum into contemporary art and helped transform the physical space. He was one of the brightest, most talented, and successful business people I ever knew."

Helene Galen, Palm Springs Art Museum Board of Trustees
