This exhibition gathers photographs, paintings, sculptures, and other works from the museum’s permanent collection to explore multiple expressions of heroism and remembrance in art. The selection is loosely inspired by Anne Carson’s novel Autobiography of Red, an imaginative retelling of the myth of Hercules where the winged monster Geryon falls in love with the hero, has his heart broken, and finds solace in telling his story.

This exhibition examines the diverse ways that artists manifest heroic self-expression and make the past their own. “If the world ends now,” Geryon contemplates, “no one will see my autobiography.”

Autobiography of Red: Subjectivity, Heroism, and Memory is curated by Adam Lerner, JoAnn McGrath Executive Director/CEO, Palm Springs Art Museum and Sharrissa Iqbal, Associate Curator, Modern & Contemporary Art, Palm Springs Art Museum.
