Harvey (1950), 104 minutes
Director Henry Koster
Cast: James Stewart, Josephine Hull
This whimsical fantasy from Henry Koster (The Bishop's Wife, My Man Godfrey) stars James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd, a wealthy tippler who's driven his snooty sister Veta (Josephine Hull) to distraction with his eccentric antics, and particularly with his constant imaginary companion, Harvey - a six foot rabbit with a heart of gold. At her wit's end, Veta finally decides to commit Elwood to a sanitarium, but at this juncture things start to go amusingly awry. The film won Oscar and Golden Globe Awards for Hull in the role of Elwood's frustrated sister, and Stewart received Best Actor nominations from both awards organizations for his role as the sweet natured - if delusional - Dowd.
