CONTEMPORARY GLASS 2012 / 2013
Glass has special aesthetic properties that make it an ideal material that can be shaped in countless ways, combined with other materials, and made into sculptures or installations. Light reveals the optical richness of color in glass while emphasizing the volumetric sensuousness of form.
This exhibition brings together noted national and international artists who demonstrate the range and diversity of glass techniques and styles. View figurative works by American artists Oben Abright, Karen LaMonte, and Janis Miltenberger. Study sculptures by Swedish sculptor Bertil Vallien, Czech artist Aleš Vaši?ek, American Daniel Clayman, and Masahiro Asaka from Japan --all masters of the mold-making and casting processes for creating large sculptures. Australian artists Matthew Curtis, Clare Belfrage, Mel Douglas, Ben Edols, and Kathy Elliott apply cold-working techniques to their hand-blown glass to utilize the material in innovative ways to create unique works of art. Dale Chihuly, William Morris, and Lino Tagliapietra are among the world’s leading glass blowers whose artwork exemplifies technical achievement coupled with artistic quality. Other artists such as Mildred Howard and Therman Statom create innovative glass installations merging formal investigations of space, texture, and light with social and cultural commentary.
