Welcome to the 2009-2010 Art Workshops at the Palm Springs Art Museum.
Workshops take place in the Sidonia Milano Center on the museum's Lower Level. Workshops are geared to all adult levels of experience, except where noted. Weekday classes last from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekend classes are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Most classes are limited to 12 students, to provide unique personal attention, and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register as early as possible to ensure your place in a class.
Registration
Workshop fees are required at the time of class registration and may be paid by credit card or check. You may register with the museum's Box Office, either in person or by calling 760.325.4490.
Cancellation Policy
Classes must reach a minimum enrollment 30 days before class start, or the class will be cancelled and full refunds will be issued. Student cancellations made less than 30 days out will be refunded, less $50, only if the cancelled space is taken by another student. There are no pro-rated refunds for partial workshop attendance.
Artist Council Memberships

Life Drawing Workshops

Solarplate Printing
Instructor: Dan Welden
Sunday to Tuesday, January 24 to 26

Developed by master printmaker Dan Welden, solarplate etching utilizes UV light and water instead of traditional grounds and acids. The solarplate is a light-sensitized plate that accepts drawings and paintings on acetate, photocopies, computer print-outs on transparenrt film, and photographs on film. Artists can also paint directly on the solarplate. Participants will be able to produce several 7 x 10 images during this intensive workshop. Larger plates may be available with prior request. Encaustic Painting and You

One of the worlds oldest art media, encaustic is a method of painting in which colors in wax are fused to a surface. This workshop covers the basic principles of encaustic painting, including creating the medium with beeswax, rosin and oil pigment, the preparation of surfaces, transfer of images, and different methods of applying the encaustic medium. Assemblage by its nature redefines our relationships with objects. This class encourages out-of-the-box creativity by incorporating objects into your art. This unique class brings together two instructors to illustrate two distinct assemblage approaches, which will stimulate your creativity. Materials for the first day are provided, but for the following days, students should bring anything from meaningful mementoes to interesting junk, to create something unique and special.
Drawing with Confidence

Day one practices drawing still life set-ups with an emphasis on contour drawing, composition, proportion, placement and values, especially light and shadow. Day two focuses on simple landscape drawing useful for travel or location sketching, and for preliminary painting studies. Perspective studies will also be presented. Day three, learn the principles of successful portrait drawing. 1-Day Figure Drawing

This workshop will concentrate on four distinct approaches to life drawing. Experimenting with these methodologies and combining them is what creates a personal style. A short demonstration and lecture will precede medium-length poses with a live model. The key to good drawing is seeing clearly and knowing what to look for. Spontaneous Watercolor

Basic Techniques of Acrylic Painting

In this technique-oriented studio painting workshop, beginning and intermediate students will learn how to paint with acrylic – how to set up your palette, use your brushes, mix colors and how to apply paint to the canvas. Bright and Bold Acrylics

Bring life into your acrylic paintings. We will use still life as a vehicle for seeing shapes, colors and light while applying the elements of strong composition. Each day starts with a warm-up to loosen up overall painting. Then we'll move to a still life painting and take it to finish. Beginners will work from simple objects, while advanced painters will work from more complex arrangements. Positive Approach to Negative Painting

This workshop focuses on projects designed to teach the student how to develop paintings using negative shapes and glazing. Expressive Figure Master Class

Non-traditional marking instruments will be explored, including crafting primitive pens out of wooden dowels, to unlock bold marking potential. Plein-Air Color, Color, Color!

Plein-air painting on location at the beautiful east end of the Coachella Valley. Class will convene at Ms. McClary's residence before venturing to a special location each day. One location features the unique colors of water, bougainvillea and palm trees, and the second will feature the glories of late spring in the desert. Plein-Air Design, Design, Design!

Thursday and Friday, April 22 & 23

Class begins each day at the museum, with in-studio demonstrations by the instructor and some preparatory work by the students to help focus for the day ahead. Moving to locations near the museum. Students will learn how to translate what they see into coherent and appealing compositions. Oil is preferred, but if student is proficient, other media may be used.
