An Evening with Brian Stokes Mitchell

Concert immediately followed by a dinner Dubbed "The Last Leading Man" by the New York Times, Brian Stokes Mitchell has enjoyed a rich and varied career on Broadway, television and film, along with appearances in the great American concert halls.

He has performed selections from "Porgy and Bess" with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony at Carnegie Hall; Performed works by Aaron Copland and various contemporary composers at the Hollywood Bowl with the L.A. Philharmonic under the batons of Leonard Slatkin and John Mauceri; Broadway tunes at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC under the baton of Marvin Hamlisch (most recently at the National Symphony Orchestra's 75th season Pops concert debut), and Jazz and standards with Maestro John Williams at Disney Hall and with the Boston Pops. He recently debuted Pulitzer prize winning composer David Del Tredici's "Rip Van Winkle" with the National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. He has also been invited to the White House and has performed for Presidents Clinton and Obama.

His Broadway career includes performances in "Man of La Mancha" (Tony nomination and Helen Hayes Award); "Kiss Me Kate" (Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards); "Ragtime" (Tony nomination); August Wilson's "King Hedley II" (Tony nomination); "Kiss of the Spider Woman;" "Jelly's Last Jam;" David Merrick's "Oh, Kay!" and "Mail," which earned him a Theatre World award for outstanding Broadway Debut.

He headlined the Carnegie Hall concert presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" with Reba McEntire, which aired on PBS in the Spring of 2006. It was also released on DVD and CD . He reprised his role along with Reba McEntire in July of 2007 at the Hollywood bowl then returned to The Hollywood bowl in August of 2008 starring as Javert in Les Miserables.

His long television career began with a seven year stint on "Trapper John, MD." Numerous film and TV appearances more recently include "One Last Thing" which debuted at this year's Toronto Film Festival, recurring roles on "Crossing Jordan" and "Frasier," PBS' "Great Performances," DreamWorks' "The Prince of Egypt ," and his "Presidential Debut" in "The Singer and the Song" from the White House. In May of 2011, he opened in the film "Jumping The Broom" playing opposite Angela Bassett.

Cabaret 88

Back by popular demand, Cabaret 88 returns this season for a record five performances. Audiences can enjoy the cabaret stylings of Christiane Noll, Danny Gurwin, Gregg Edelman, Sally Mayes and James Snyder in an intimate setting on stage, where eighty-eight seats will surround each performer. Participants will enjoy appetizers at a pre-concert reception.

Christine Noll - 11.02.11 6:00 PM

Chistiane Noll has been living up to her reputation as being one of the most versatile actresses in the American Musical Theater with a varied repertoire in Broadway, Opera, Operetta and Jazz. She was nominated for both a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award and won a Helen Hayes Award for her portrayal of Mother on Broadway in the Kennedy Center Revival of Ragtime. She made her Broadway debut starring in Jekyll & Hyde, creating the role of Emma. Ms. Noll received an Ovation Award for her comedic turn as Hope Cladwell in the National Tour of Urinetown, wowed audiences again as Vanna Vane in the new musical The Mambo Kings and soared as Jane Smart in the American premiere of The Witches Of Eastwick.

Danny Gurwin - 11.30.11 6:00 PM

Hailed by the Chicago Sun-Times for his "thrilling voice", Danny Gurwin has been performing on and off-Broadway for the last 14 years. On Broadway, Danny made his debut as Hal in The Scarlet Pimpernel. He also stood stark naked onstage for over 500 performances as Malcolm in The Full Monty. Other Broadway appearances include Urinetown, Little Women, the Encores! revival of Kismet, the New York City Opera's A Little Night Music, and recently, co-starred in the LA company of the Broadway hit How The Grinch Stole Christmas at the Pantages.

Numerous recordings and regional productions include plays and musicals and perfomances in concert at the Library of Congress, Chicago's Grant Park Symphony, the New Haven Symphony, the South Coast Symphony, and recently making his Disney Concert Hall debut singing selections from Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow. His new solo evening Miracle Of Miracles, which celebrates the Jewish writers of the Musical Theatre, is currently touring.

Gregg Edelman - 01.04.12 6:00 PM

Multiple Tony nominee Gregg Edelman has appeared in Broadway productions of Into the Woods, 1776, City of Angels, Passion, Falsettos, Cabaret, Les Misérables, Cats, and in revivals of Cabaret and Oliver! He's been nominated for four Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards (one win) and two Outer Critics Awards. Film and television credits include Little Children, Spiderman 2, Crimes and Misdemeanors and The Proposal. He is a regular on the CBS series Hack and was last on Broadway in Wonderful Town.

This Cabaret 88 performance, entitled Back in Town is a jaunty new show that has just enjoyed a second highly successful engagement at Feinstein's in Manhattan.  Back in Town is a show filled with romance, humor and Gregg's love of the music that made nightclubs a special place to be during the 50's and 60's.  From Porter to Legrand to his late friend Cy Coleman, the music and stories will transport you back to long-ago nights in the great supperclubs at swanky venues like The Persian Room and the Coconut Grove.

Sally Mayes - 01.25.12 6:00 PM

The New York Times calls her "a singer of incandescent ebullience, deliciously saucy."  People Magazine describes her as "the kind of rich theatrical voice that elevates a show tune."  And Time Magazine says, "Sally Mayes renders songs as richly nuanced as one-act plays."

Her rare and much anticipated nightclub appearances have garnered her rave reviews from Coast to coast, and she has been nominated for twelve Manhattan Association of Cabaret (MAC) awards and has won two BISTROS for excellence in Cabaret and recording. "Music runs through my blood," as Sally puts it. "It isn't something I do, it's something I am."

She has appeared on Broadway in Cy Coleman's Welcome To The Club, and is perhaps best known for her performance in She Loves Me for which she won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations.  Urban Cowboy garnered her another Drama Desk nomination, (Featured Actress in a Musical), and she most recently appeared in Steel Magnolias.  She has several solo albums, including The Dorothy Fields Songbook, Our Private World, The Comden and Green Songbook, Boys and Girls Like You and Me, and her latest release, Valentine. 

This Cabaret 88 performance is her acclaimed Story Hour, a woman's journey through the stories of her life.  Some of them will make you laugh, some will make you cry, some will make you think and hopefully everyone will learn something along the way.  The hilarious, heartbreaking, award-winning evening displays every song as a story and demonstrates that Sally is truly at the top of her game.

James Snyder - 04.11.12 6:00 PM

Actor and singer James Snyder has appeared in films like Pretty Persuasion, She's the Man, Anderson's Cross and Shuttle. He has had guest appearances in the TV series Gilmore Girls, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Related, Without a Trace and Eli Stone. He also starred in the film An American in China.

Snyder appeared in a number of musicals, including Oklahoma!  and the stage production of Reefer Madness: The Musical. He has performed in The Fantasticks and played “Luke Skywalker” in the critically acclaimed production Star Wars Trilogy in 30 Minutes.  He has acted in various musicals and made his Broadway debut in the stage version of the John Waters 1990 movie, Cry-Baby. Snyder's debut album was released in 2009.
