Jeffrey Gibson: ALIVE! installation for the inaugural presentation of Desert X

February 25th – April 30th, 2017
Palm Springs Art Museum

Jeffrey Gibson is a featured artist in the inaugural presentation of Desert X

Jeffrey Gibson, born in 1972 in Colorado, is a featured artist in the inaugural presentation of Desert X, the international art biennial in the Coachella Valley. He is repurposing a decommissioned blade from a windmill that will be installed to rise out of the museum’s lower-level sculpture garden. The blade will be 52 feet tall and painted to contain the phrases “We are living!” “I am alive,” “You are alive,” and “They are alive.”

Part Choctaw and part Cherokee, Gibson explores his Native American heritage and responds using a visual vocabulary that permeates his painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance works. His last solo show at Marc Straus in New York featured colorfully embroidered and beaded punching bags with the Everlast label with tribal designs, as well as powerful abstract expressionist paintings on rawhide and canvas. Gibson recently had a solo exhibition at the Savannah College of Art and Design Museum and was included in SITElines.2016: New Perspectives on Art of the Americas, the biennial at SITE Santa Fe in New Mexico. He has solo exhibitions this year at Haggerty Museum of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rochester Art Center in New York, and Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center in Oklahoma City. His traveling mid-career retrospective exhibition opens at Denver Art Museum in 2018.
